Happy Thanksgiving!

I trust you are all getting ready for the holiday season and enjoying the cooler weather.

With Fall also comes the drumbeat of warnings about influenza and the need to have a flu shot. I have not written much about vaccinations up to this point. Infectious disease is a serious problem and anything that can diminish the possibility of acute illness seems like a slam dunk. The trouble is that this is a very complicated issue and one that has been greatly distorted in much of the literature, including the peer-reviewed, indexed literature. It does not make me happy to write that I believe profit motive has long overtaken honesty even in the medical literature. Again, this is a very long topic and one I could probably write a book on, but it would be a very disturbing book and not much fun to write.

Instead of a long post that few would want to read, I am going to give you just one example regarding the flu vaccines. I will not go into the dangers of injecting weakened and dead foreign proteins through all of your defense mechanisms, directly into your bloodstream, nor the additions of preservatives such as Thiomerisol (mercury), nor the frequent inadvertent piggybacking of unknown viruses into the vaccines.

To get back to my example, I would ask you… by what percentage does the flu shot decrease your potential to get the flu? It is hard to get an answer to this question because there is almost never an independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study done before mass manufacturing and delivery to the population. This was true for the Swine Flu vaccine of last year and also the H1N1 vaccines, in case you were wondering. The pharmaceutical houses who manufacture vaccines actually say that it would be unethical to test them on human populations because to deny the ‘placebo ‘ group the vaccine would be harmful to them. This doesn’t stop other studies, but if the flu shot gives you 100% immunity then it would be worth it right? The problem is that the shot actually confers about one percent decrease in the chance you will get the flu. This is only if the vaccine matches the actual flu that is going around. As you may or may not know, the vaccine may well not (and often doesn’t) match the actual influenza for the current year.. This number comes from a meta-study of 36 trials, and the study itself warns that the results may “strongly favor the vaccine industry”. (Half of the studies were conducted by vaccine manufacturers.) If you would like to look this study up yourself, you can find it here:

In other words, for 99 out of 100 people, getting the flu shot does nothing for them. It may diminish the severity in 3 out of one hundred. In the conclusion, the study notes:

Vaccination had…no effect on hospital admissions or complication rates. Vaccine use did not affect the number of people hospitalized or working days lost. The review showed that reliable evidence on influenza is thin but there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions… There is no evidence that the influenza vaccines affect complications, such as pneumonia, or transmission of the flu to others. {I believe that is the whole rationale for vaccinating the population, -that it is supposed to decrease the chance of others getting the flu!]

To claim that vaccines protect everyone is, when examined objectively, intellectually dishonest and honestly, fraudulent. Imagine any other product that works only one percent of the time. Guess how fast the FDA would pull it off the market if it was an herbal product?

The FDA routinely, by the way, approves products from the pharmaceutical manufacturers that work about 5% of the time. Meaning that for 95% of the people taking them, they are useless at best. (Don’t forget the side effects!)

I am not just telling you an upsetting story. I have a simple suggestion. If you want some protection against the flu, you would do better to look at Vitamin D. 75-95% of Americans have been found to be deficient in Vitamin D. A new study was recently conducted on children in Japan. This trial, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Am J Clin Nutr (March 10, 2010). doi:10.3945/ajcn.2009.29094) was a randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study involving 334 children half of whom were given 1200 IU of vitamin D3 per day. This administration of 1200 IU of Vitamin D3 per day resulted in an absolute reduction of nearly 8 percent. Meaning, by the way, that vitamin D3 is 800% more effective than the flu vaccine in preventing the flu in children!

“The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd; indeed in view of the silliness of the majority of mankind, a widespread belief is more likely to be foolish than sensible.”

Bertrand Russell

Medical dogma is bankrupt. It has been for a long time, but there is just so much money at stake. You already know how to be healthy. Eat real food -not processed food-like substances. Drink water and avoid sugared (fruit juices and sodas) drinks. Get enough sleep. Be moderately active. Examine the role of stress in your life and deal with it. Maintain real relationships with more than one person. Stay in adjustment. Your immune system works much better when you are in adjustment. Some of my patients tell me that their adjustment IS their flu shot! Life is not one long emergency no matter what the media would like you to think. Turn off the tv. Turn off the talk shows. Listen to beautiful music. Listen to the silence sometimes. Take walks in nature. Find a way to feel grateful. Love each other.

This is what works. It always has, it always will.

Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your family.
